Techniques and Crafts:

We work from raw opal, which we shape by hand using diamond tools. The setting of the ring is first sculpted in wax, then made in 18K gold using the ancestral technique of lost wax casting. Each stage of creation, from sculpture to foundry, from setting to polishing, is carried out in our workshop in Cordes-sur-Ciel in Tarn.

Symbolism of Opal:

In the Greco-Roman world, opal was considered a powerful good luck charm, adorning the staffs of Roman generals. A famous example is that of Nonius, a senator who preferred exile to giving his opal to Mark Antony, who wanted it for Cleopatra (CHGH).

In the Orient, opal is associated with hope, divine protection and luck. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are believed to have given opal its vibrant colors (NIMO).

Ancient Beliefs:

  • Light-haired women believed that opal guaranteed them eternal happiness (PARK).
  • It was said that those harboring negative thoughts could not wear an opal without their negativity turning against them (PARK).
  • In ancient China, during droughts, an image of the Dragon Yin was made to invoke rain (GRAN).
